![]() Pandora isn't a typical music streaming service, as it aims to help you discover new music based on the "genes" it analyzes in all the music it can. Instead of offering a set of categories and genres to choose from, Pandora first asks you to enter the name of an artist you like. ![]() Then, Pandora plays a song from this artists and asks whether you do or don't like the song, or if you're tired of the song and don't want it played for a month. After this you can begin building individual "radio stations" by rating music and adding more similar artists. Pandora uses all this data to find new music you may like according to the melody, rhythm, orchestration, lyrics, and the other data it collects about the music you rate. Over the years, Pandora has amassed a broad catalog of popular, independent, and even classical music to stream. The site supports itself with advertising on the web or by offering subscription plans that remove advertising and enable streaming to other devices for $36 per year. The threat of extremely heavy royalty payments levied against web-based radio stations nearly shut Pandora (and a number of other webcasters) down in 2007. A royalty cap deal was reached, however, in August that allowed Pandora to keep the lights on, albeit only for US residents. Running on both Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Mac OS X 10.4/10.5 via Adobe AIR, Pandora Desktop (beta) is made up of a few choice components lifted from the main site. It isn't really a redesign or a "mobile" version, as the company was looking to get this into users' hands while still grappling with the question of advertising. On the main web site, Pandora employs both banner advertising and the occasional audio ad for free accounts. It also provides links for buying music from online retailers. For some reason, though, the company decided to leave audio ads out of Pandora Desktop (at least for now), which means users can start the client and immediately hide it and listen to free music all day. This could be a tactic to get users interested in the desktop version, then the company could bring audio ads at a later date.
